In March of 2002, Bergman donated 45 carton boxes of original material to the Swedish Film Institute (SFI). The material consisted of a veritable treasure trove of manuscripts, notes, photographs and other material relating to the director's long career. In conjunction with Sweden's Royal Dramatic Theater, Sveriges Television and AB Svensk Filmindustri, the SFI has set up the Bergman Foundation in order to organize and administer this material. An archive and an internet database are being set up so that researchers, scholars and, eventually, Bergman enthusiasts in general may benefit from this generous gift. The Bergman Foundation archive will certainly be of great importance to film researchers wanting to know more about Swedish film, as summarized by Ase Kleveland, Director General of the Swedish Film Institute: "With his vast knowledge and commitment, nobody has made a greater contribution to the preservation of Sweden's film heritage than Ingmar Bergman. Now, with the Bergman Collection, we will be able to uphold the proud history of Swedish cinema in all its glory."
